Giving Feedback

Giving Feedback: makes hard conversations useful and fair.

Best for: Any time, soon after the event · Time: 5–15 min
Domain: Across all domains · Focus area: Executing

How it works

The SBI model from the Center for Creative Leadership describes the Situation, the Behaviour and its Impact. It keeps feedback on facts rather than character.

  • Be specific and timely.
  • Describe behaviour, not personality.
  • Ask for their view.

How to apply it

  1. Name the situation.
  2. Describe what you saw.
  3. Say what it caused.
  4. Ask and agree a next step.
In practice

“In Tuesday’s review, you interrupted Lea three times. She stopped contributing, and we lost her input.”

Pro tip

Give praise in the same format. It makes the hard feedback easier to hear.

Quick check

Which is behaviour rather than personality?
